Watch: Serena Williams’ US Open preparations in full force with her first practice session at the Arthur Ashe
Serena Williams is back at her home tournament as she began her first practice session at the prestigious Arthur Ashe stadium. The former World No.1 will be looking to win a record seven US Open titles this year. But her season has not been great. She suffered an agonizing loss to US Open defending champion, Emma Raducanu in straight sets (4-6, 0-6) at the 2022 Western and Southern Open. The 23-time grand slam champion announced her retirement which will most likely happen after the end of the 2022 US Open.
The last grand slam of the year is set to take place from August 29 to September 11 at the posh Flushing Meadows, New York. Serena Williams intends to make this tournament count. Williams could match Margaret Court‘s record of 24 grand slams if she wins the title this year. She has defined women’s tennis in a strong light after having a dominant professional tennis career which is rare to see in the WTA tour these days.
I have never liked the word retirement: Serena Williams
In her personal Vogue essay, Williams described her understanding of retirement and why women in sports have to make this tough decision in their careers. She said, “Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.”
On her difficult decision, Williams further said, “If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labour of expanding our family.”
Multiple grand slam champion, Williams, is set to mark the end of her career after US Open. In her first practice session at Arthur Ashe stadium, we can see her practising her iconic smash and her impeccable serve. There’s no doubt that she’ll have immense support from her home crowd once the main fixtures begin.
