Roger Federer returned to the court for the final time in his professional career as he lined up alongside Rafael Nadal. The rivals turned friends are playing doubles at the 2022 Laver Cup post and the American pair of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe are named as the final opponents for the retiring Swiss.

Federer, known for his magic on the court, pulled out yet another trick during the third game of the first set, his first service game. Although it wasn’t magic completely and more of a lucky shot, Federer’s forehand pierced the net through and landed on the other side which was eventually called a winner for the Europeans.

The Day 1 of the Laver Cup was kickstarted by a clash between Sock and Casper Ruud. Ruud won the match in a nervy tiebreaker before Stefanos Tsitsipas dislodged Diego Schwartzman in straight-sets. Tsitsipas’ win gave Team Europe a 2-0 advantage going into the evening session.

The evening session started with Andy Murray taking on Alex de Minaur. The first set went for 81 minutes with Murray clinching it. de Minaur however found his way back with a easy win in the second set before coming clutch in the third set to get the first points of the year for Team World.

Federer and Nadal will look to restore the 2-point advantage. With Federer set to retire at the end of this match, he would certainly look to hang up a winning racket and go out on a high in front of a packed crowd at the O2 Arena in London.

Fans were however impressed with Federer‘s sorcery. While it was certainly a lucky shot, many attributed to his magical touch that had made millions fans of him and the sport over his glorious 24-year long career.
