The men’s doubles defending champion, Thanasi Kokkinakis, was surprised to hear a journalist calling him by the name Nick. After his longest-ever three-setter match played, he came across some funny scenes in the post-match press conference of the 2023 Australian Open.

In a match that got postponed multiple times due to rain, the Australian finally won his opening round after a 24-hour wait. The match was also marred by the controversy of Fabio Fognini tanking numerous times. Thanasi was comfortably winning the first two sets and also leading the third set 4-2 when there was a rain interruption. The match was then decided to continue on Wednesday, and it took no time for the Aussie to win it.

The post-match press conference saw some unexpected scenes as people still miss Nick Kyrgios. The press conference started with a journalist saying “Hi, Nick.” To which Thanasi replied and said “Wow!!.” The conversation continued when the reporter said “Nick is out, so you are the favorite for the Greek Aussies. Tell us, what do you think about your message to them? How much support do you need from them, and if you have anything to say to them in Greek?”

However, Thanasi didn’t let him go away with it and replied “You should ask Nick.” He later pulled the journalist’s leg by telling him to go away.

Nick Kyrgios later took to Twitter and replied to the video saying “Kyriakis” while laughing about it. The two childhood friends had a serious laugh about the incident after Thanasi’s victory.

After a dramatic first round for the Aussie, a big challenge in the name of Andy Murray awaits him in the second round. While Thanasi won his first round in straight sets (6-1, 6-2, Andy had a contrasting encounter. He had a tougher opponent in Matteo Berrettini and won a five-setter 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (7-9), and 7-6 (10-6). However, Andy will be confident after winning a marathon match against one of the tougher opponents.
