WATCH: “The GOAT is back!” Roger Federer makes his much-awaited return to the tennis court
Roger Federer
Tennis icon Roger Federer has been out of action for over a year now. He played at Wimbledon last year and after losing in the quarterfinals, decided to undergo a third surgery on his knee so as to stay fit. He was out of crutches earlier this year and ever since then has been in rehab.
According to his schedule, he is expected to return to the Laver Cup next month and will also play the Basel Indoors a month later. A piece of big good news for the tennis community is that Federer has started practicing after a 400-day long hiatus. Federer took to Instagram to share a reel of himself hitting on an outdoor hard court.
Federer began training indoors back in March and it was assumed that he should start training outdoors around June. But his recovery took a couple of months extra. Better late than never, Federer is currently training back home and everyone will have their eyes glued to see his much-awaited return to professional tennis in the Laver Cup in over a month’s time.
Will Roger Federer play the upcoming US Open?
After his third knee surgery last year, 41-year-old Federer was expected to return around Wimbledon this year. But due to his late recovery, that was pushed by a month which was in line for the US Open. He is currently fit to play but lacks a lot of match practice. In addition to that, playing his comeback tournament in New York- where the stakes are very high plus the chances of injuring himself again are prominent, doesn’t make sense.
Hence, Federer will miss the US Open and will directly play in the Laver Cup- a tournament where stakes are low. He will keep his schedule minimalistic this season and will use the remaining months to build up for the next year.
