The final result

Tennis fans around the world have watched this scene many times. The winner of the final is decided with a beautifully hit forehand, backhand or ace, and then a few minutes later, the winner is holding up the trophy bearing his name. It seems to magically appear on the cups as soon as that last point is won. But this video shows the moment Novak Djokovic’s name was added next to ’2023’ on the Australian Open trophy.

The video takes the viewer into the room where the process occurs. The room contains a TV and a work desk. The person responsible for engraving has his eyes set on the TV. As soon as Djokovic wins his championship point, the work begins. The engraver checks the TV for a second time to make sure. He then proceeds to work his magic with the object used to engrave. He is seen working on just the base of the trophy without the cup on it.

The engraver wears a thick spectacle over his eyes with special lenses. Those are presumably for him to look closely at every nook and corner of every word he engraves. He then starts carving out the numbers and letters. It’s delicate work and seems to take much concentration. The engraver spends a short time perfecting every letter.

The viewers are then shown the result after the engraver wipes away the residue. ‘2023’ is engraved to the left of ‘N. Djokovic (SRB).’ The other previous winners’ carvings are still visible, and funnily enough, Djokovic appears on the list five times. He has always been incredible in Australia and proved so against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Djokovic and Tsitsipas participated in a highly anticipated final. The two players are on opposite spectrums of their careers. The match was expected to prove the rise of the new generation or the continuing dominance of the ‘Big Three.’

The match started with Djokovic on fire. He quickly raced to a 4-1 lead and shocked Tsitsipas. The Greek couldn’t make a comeback, as Djokovic won 6-3. He regained some clarity next set and played smartly to have a championship point at 5-4. But Djokovic turned the game around to win the set 7-6(4). The third set was similar, with both battling hard.

The match was a high-quality one. The final set consisted of the two players winning alternative games. This took it to another tiebreak. Djokovic again was in the driving seat. He took the lead to 5-1. But then he lost focus and the lead was cut to 5-3. He still went and won the match at the second championship point.
