Serena recently announced that she will soon be retiring from professionally playing tennis, she made the announcement that the ongoing US Open will be the final tournament of her career, the news of which left millions of fans around the world emotional and heartbroken. With the ongoing US Open being the last tournament of Serena Williams‘ glorious career, the American icon was expected to get a huge reception in her native country which she did as she defeated Danka Kovinic in the first round of the tournament. The highlight of the match was the video that was played after the match that paid tribute to Serena’s legendary career.
The video was narrated by American host, Oprah Winfrey who said, “You’ve given us so much, All we can do is thank you. “Thank you for dressing to the nines and bringing your dancing shoes. Thank you for turning the center court into center stage. Thank you for showing us how to be graceful, powerful, and fearless. Thank you for changing the face of the game. For inspiring the next generation, Thank you for thinking outside the lines and encouraging us to evolve, Thank you for showing us how to love the sport and for always loving us back.”
Every fan has their eyes on Serena Williams in this tournament as this is likely the last time the American icon is competing for the title. After defeating Kovinic in the first round, Williams is scheduled to go up against Anett Kontaveit in the second round of the tournament.
