In the finals of the Libema Open 2022, then World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev, also the top seed, was to face Tim van Rijthoven who was ranked 205th in the world and was a wildcard entrant into the tournament. With not many expecting the Dutchman to cause another upset, lightning did strike again as he beat Medvedev 6-4, 6-1 in mere 65 minutes.

Tim won his maiden ATP title in his debut ATP Tour appearance, having almost dropped a bagel on Daniil in the second set. The victory saw Tim rise 99 places in the rankings to be ranked 106th in the world while Medvedev was confirmed to become the World No. 1 yet again even before the tournament started.

Medvedev has been one of the most candid and honest players on the Tour and shows the trait of himself in victories and defeats alike. Yesterday was no different as he had a smile on his face throughout the presentation ceremony while entertaining the crowd for the final time this year when he got the mic in his hand.

“First of all, congrats Tim, amazing week. First time in an ATP tournament and straight-away you destroy the number 2 in the world in straight-set in the finals so I think it must be a good feeling. I don’t know how it feels, but it must be a good feeling,” said Medvedev to Tim as the crowd burst out laughing at the Russian’s comment.

“An amazing match today. Keep it going. I remember you from juniors, you have the talent so now you need to make more matches like this and more tournaments like this! Congrats to you and your team,” said Daniil further congratulating the Dutchman and his team for winning the title on their home soil in what has been a memorable week as he picked up two Top-10 wins, one against Medvedev and another one against Felix Auger-Aliassime while also defeating Taylor Fritz, the current World No. 14.
