“Watching Federer is like looking at a work of art,” Carlos Alcaraz says he became ‘enchanted’ by Roger Federer’s elegance on court

Carlos Alcaraz is arguably one of the most talented tennis players on the ATP Tour. The Spaniard claimed the US Open title last year, which helped him become the world number one ranked tennis player for the first time in his career. He is often compared to his countryman, Rafael Nadal who is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all-time.

Belonging from the same country, it was expected that Carlos Alcaraz would consider Rafael Nadal as his idol while making his way through the junior circuit. However, the Spaniard has earlier declared that he consider Roger Federer as his idol. The 2022 US Open champion reveals that he was left stunned by Roger Federer’s elegance on court, especially back in his prime.

Carlos Alcaraz stated that he admired Rafael Nadal as well, and always made it a point to watch his matches. “Rafa is someone I’ve always watched. I admire him a lot. But Federer, the class he had, the way he got people to see tennis: That was beautiful. Watching Federer is like looking at a work of art. It’s elegance, he did everything magnificently. I became enchanted by him,” said Alcaraz.

Carlos Alcaraz’s coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero believes that the 19-year-old has tremendous amount of potential. The former tennis player believes that the teenager could go down as one of the best in history. However, he acknowledged the fact that he is still pretty young, and could easily get carried away by outside distractions.

Those of us who are on the inside like to be a bit more cautious. I think Carlos has qualities that make him tremendously well placed to be one of the best in history. That’s clear to me. But obviously many things can happen. He’s young. There are a lot of things he doesn’t see. We all know what the risks are: partying, getting distracted, not concentrating on tennis,” said Ferrero.

Carlos Alcaraz spent the last couple of months out on the sidelines, as he missed the Nitto ATP Finals and the 2023 Australian Open. The Spaniard returned to action at the Argentina Open last week, where he claimed his first title of the season. Given his long injury layoff, he looked a bit rusty in the second round, however, there was no stopping him in the latter stages of the tournament.
