Kevin Krawietz, dejected German players look at Japan celebrating

Kevin Krawietz, 2-time Roland Garros winner and a former World No. 7 in Doubles brought out his funny side recently. Representing Germany at the 2022 Davis Cup Finals, Krawietz and his teammates were unable to move past the quarter-final stage as they lost to Canada.

Jan-Lennard Struff drew the first blood defeating Denis Shapovalov in the first singles match. Felix Auger-Aliassime however leveled the scores with a straight-set win over Oscar Otte to make the Doubles match do-or-die. Krawietz and Tim Puetz were up against Vasek Pospisil and Shapovalov and despite winning the first set 6-2, they lost the next two sets 3-6, 3-6 as the Canadians qualified for the semis.

Speaking after the match about their defeat, Krawietz had a hilarious response. He compared their loss to Germany’s national men’s team competing at the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup. The Germans started their campaign in Qatar with a defeat against Japan.

Japan was the underdog in the match but still managed to turn the match around in the last 30 minutes to stun the 4-time World Cup winners 2-1 despite trailing 0-1 for 75 minutes in the match. Having attacked continuously for almost an hour in the match, Germany had no clue once Japan started attacking and was handed the defeat.

“Like the national football team, we also played amazingly for only 60 minutes… Only the first set and then we couldn’t finish. Yes, it happens. Of course, this is very disappointing. We wanted to help the team with the second point but we couldn’t do that today. So yes, Canada deserved to win,” said Krawietz after his defeat in the Davis Cup in comments reported by WeloveTennis.

Russia was the defending champion at this year’s Davis Cup. The sanctions levied on the nation due to the Ukraine War sees the team suspended from playing the competition which meant no defending champion was to compete this year opening up the draw. The Germans however failed to capitalize on that.

Alexander Zverev‘s injury suffered at the French Open has kept him out of action till now and it was a massive blow to the nation’s chances this year. Germany last won the Davis Cup back in 1993. The Germans (back then playing as West Germany) had won back-to-back titles in 1988 and 1989 but have been unlucky since then with the drought now extending to 29 years since winning the ‘World Cup of Tennis’.
