“We made a promise, right? We are going to play” Roger Federer fulfills the promise he made to young Izyan Ahmad way back in 2017
Roger Federer and Izyan Ahmad
Roger Federer, one of the greatest players of all time and former world number one, was last seen on the Centre Court not for playing but rather for making his appearance at the 100th-anniversary celebration event at the All England Club. The 8-time Wimbledon champion expressed his desire to once more come back to play at the SW19 crushing rumors around his retirement announcement. He has been missing in action from the competitive sport since his last appearance at the 2021 Wimbledon Championship where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals.
Federer, the 20-time Grand Slam champion, is likely to make his return to the court in the Laver Cup where he will be a part of a star-studded team Europe with Bjorn Borg as the team captain and Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray as his team-mates.
“Thank you Roger Federer for keeping the promise” Izyan Ahmad thrilled after finding his promise fulfilled after five years
During the US Open in the year 2017, Izyan Ahmad(Zizou) requested the Swiss maestro to play for a few more years, so that he could play against him as a professional someday. Five years later, Federer is yet to retire, while Ahmad, the 11-year-old, became the No. 1 player in both singles and doubles in the US earlier this year, and looks well on track to make it onto the ATP tour in the years to come.
On the birthday of Roger Federer, Zizou on his social media account Twitter, wished the champion and recalled the times when Federer went to fulfill his promise and called it the best day of his life. The Swiss maestro gave a moment to cherish for the young kid by keeping his promise which he had made five years ago.
The young lad had gone to dine out with his coach at a restaurant named ‘Barilla‘ where the restaurant wanted to fulfill Ahmed’s dream. Federer was in hiding and when he came out to play, Ahmed could not believe that his dream is going to be fulfilled. The Swiss maestro on seeing the young player at once reminded him of his promise. He said “We made a promise, right? We are going to play. You ready?“
The duo exchanged a few exquisite shots, as Federer constantly peppered in words of advice and praise for the 11-year-old. Both of them went on to play for quite some time but the final result of the match is still unknown.
