7th May became a historic date in tennis calenders as the two biggest poster boys of their generations battled it out in Caja Magica. It was Carlos Alcaraz vs Novak Djokovic in the semifinals of the Mutua Madrid Open, and it was an instant epic. Carlos Alcaraz came back from down a set and defeated Djokovic 6-7, 7-5, 7-6. It was a great spectacle to see two amazing players displaying some of the most amazing tennis.

Carlos Alcaraz became the first person in tennis history to defeat Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in consecutive rounds on the clay. This match has already become a contender for the match of the year. With all the amazing brilliancies and joys for fans this match held, certain problems too became very clear as the match ended very late. The final of the WTA Madrid Open was scheduled to take place after the Alcaraz-Djokovic match, and it was pushed back quite a lot as the match took a long time to complete.

Scheduling issues in Madrid, legends and fans equally enraged.

Former World number 1 in the women’s doubles, Rennae Stubbs, and the legendary American former world number 1, Christine Evert, were some of the people who took to Twitter to criticize the planning on the part of WTA and the tournament organizers as well. Since the Women’s event was a final and is overseen by WTA, they could easily have a fixed time slot for the final and not rely too much on ending the men’s semifinal event.

The other problem which arose was that the second semifinal between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev was scheduled after the Women’s final. Since the final started quite late, the 2nd semifinal clash too got delayed. This meant that the match-winner would have less time than the first finalist to recuperate and prepare for the final clash. All of these scheduling issues may be a pointer to a bigger problem that the authorities are not putting in the efforts to manage the game better and pay heed to the players.

The final between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev was a one-sided affair as Alcaraz thrashed Zverev to win his fifth singles title in Madrid and his fourth this year. Zverev lost quite tamely in the finals, and there may be a factor of this huge delay in the match and a disruption of the German’s schedule for the match.

Alcaraz will be one of the feared opponents in the French Open as the young star continues his ascent to the top of the tennis world.
