World number eight Andrey Rublev blasted Wimbledon‘s ban on Russian and Belarusian players as “complete discrimination” on Thursday while Belarus officials said the decision will only “incite hatred” and threatened legal action to have the sanction overturned. In view of that, Ukrainian tennis sensation Lesia Tsurenko has criticised the star via her social media handle.

In response to the invasion of Ukraine, Wimbledon barred all Russian and Belarusian players from competing in this year’s Grand Slam event on Wednesday. Rublev, as well as compatriot and world number two Daniil Medvedev and women’s fourth-ranked Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, will miss the events from June 27 to July 10. Furthermore, Andrey Rublev described Wimbledon’s decision as “illogical” and “discriminatory.”

In view of this, Ukrainian tennis player Lesia Tsurenko has slammed Andrey Rublev’s remarks on the Wimbledon banning Russian and Belarusian players stating that Rublev is “not interested in what is happening in the neighbouring country.”

The Ukrainian star went on to write via Twitter that Andrey Rublev is not even interested in the whereabouts of his own country and that he is also not interested in what is happening in the neighbouring country. Lesia Tsurenko went on to conclude her sentence by labelling the whole incident as an “abyss” and stating that she regrets that she was so blind about certain things. “That man is not interested in what is happening in his own country. At all. He also is not interested in what is happening in the neighbouring country. Impressive. What an abyss between our states and people, that I have not noticed for so long! I so regret it. I was blind.”

After defeating Fabio Fognini 6-2 6-2, Andrey Rublev will meet Novak Djokovic in the Serbian Open final. Rublev dominated the match from the beginning. The Russian made a bold move early on and never looked back. In all three of his first service games, Fognini faced break points and lost two of them. Rublev took a step back after gaining a comfortable 5-1 lead and served out the first set 6-2. Fognini’s second serve isn’t particularly good, and it was a huge concern for him in this match.

Rublev attacked at every opportunity, causing a lot of damage in the process. In the second set, he went out to an early lead as well, and, like the first, he just kept piling on. He eventually cruised on a 6-2 second-set victory, setting up a final clash against Novak Djokovic.
