Rafael Nadal has had a great start to the year commencing with winning the singles title at the Australian Open 2022 followed by winning another Grand Slam singles title at the French Open. He looked unstoppable and was in to clinch another title but suffered an abdominal injury during the quarter-final match at Wimbledon slowed down his pace and hindered his overall performance. Keeping his health in view, he had to withdraw from the Wimbledon Championship and handed a walkover to Nick Kyrgios for his maiden singles final appearance.
The Spaniard was looking at a possible return during the Montreal Masters but decided to take some more time to recover and be fit to compete at big tournaments. He made his return to the court at the Cincinnati Open but faced a shocking defeat in the first round to Borna Coric which was a shocker for all since he missed a golden chance to regain the top spot if he had possibly won the title.
It was his first match post his injury and also had made his return at Cincinnati after a gap of five years and was looking for a great start ahead of the US Open as he is among the favorites where he may have a chance to become the champion if he comes out stronger and be at his best level of play.

Nadal, apart from his professional success, has had a fair share of injuries that have impacted his performances over time and even led him to miss major tournaments. He had to miss the second half of the 2021 year due to foot injuries and surgeries which kept him away from the hard-court season. He has never denied the fact that he resorts to painkillers and injections before crucial matches to perform his best, especially after his win at Roland Garros, he accepted to have taken injections throughout the tournament to reduce the pain in his left foot.
But Nadal’s credibility and action were questioned after Colombian cyclist Nairo Quintana, who finished in sixth place, was disqualified from the Tour de France tournament because of a positive tramadol test as it is a fairly powerful painkiller banned by the International Cycling Union in 2019. Nadal’s 14th title win at the French Open in 2022 was even compared with Quintana’s disqualification over which stance is appropriate.
French player Quentin Halys expressed his disappointment and was left furious with such an ambiguous comparison between the Spaniard and the Colombian cyclist. He extended his support to the 22-time Grand Slam champion revealing that both things are different and have no connection with each other at all. He said, “What is the point of comparison? What does Nadal have to do with Quintana? Is it his fault he’s suspended?“
