Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell has already begun its qualifier rounds on 15th April. This is one of the oldest ATP 500 events to take place and is the second most important championship that takes place in Spain after the Madrid Open. It’s the third clay court tournament on the calendar to take place after Estoril Open and Monte Carlo Masters this calendar year.
Barcelona Open is played on Reial Club de Tennis Barcelona. This is quite special for Rafael Nadal, as this is his adopted club and home turf. But unfortunately, the 12-time champion of the Barcelona Open Nadal will be missing in action this year due to his injury. World no. 2 Carlos Alcaraz won the 2022 Barcelona Open championship. He defeated fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta in straight sets. German pair Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies won the doubles title.
The championship is a highly anticipated one as Carlos Alcaraz is back playing on clay after missing the Monte-Carlo Masters. Clay court specialists Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas are both eyeing to lift this trophy. Casper Ruud has already won the Estoril Open, which is an ATP 250. Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered a setback in the Monte-Carlo Open when he fell to Taylor Fritz in the Monte-Carlo quarter-finals. Second-seeded and one-time Barcelona finalist Tsitsipas is a crowd favorite to win the championship.
