“What’s the problem with throwing a middle finger?” Emma Raducanu’s ex-coach Dmitry Tursunov lauds Nick Kyrgios for his strong personality
Tursunov comments on Kyrgios' staunch personality as he criticizes the sport for being 'neutered' and 'unemotional'
Nick Kyrgios is infamous for his on-court shenanigans in addition to his fierce style of playing. In a sport like a tennis, where personalities are often suppressed in favor of more focus on the game, Kyrgios definitely stands out. Emma Raducanu‘s ex-coach, Dmitry Tursunov recently commented on Nick’s individuality.
Known for his many on-court outbursts, Kyrgios frequently engages in heated exchanges with chair umpires, fans, and even his rivals. Often, he is criticized for such behavior. However, Tursunov believes that Kyrgios is much more appealing as compared to other players because he hasn’t ‘lost who he is’.
Kyrgios is frequently regarded as one of tennis’ top entertainers on the ATP Tour. He has been involved in many controversies, a prime example being the 2022 Wimbledon. Tursunov, a former professional turned coach, worked with Raducanu for a trial period. He expressed his dissatisfaction with tennis players’ failure to display their true selves while defending Kyrgios’ conduct on the court.
The Russian revealed why he considered the world No.19’s antics so entertaining despite the fact that they frequently got Kyrgios into trouble, fines, and occasionally suspensions. Most players are afraid of having their words ‘twisted’.The former World No.20 said, “In tennis, they are trying to neuter the emotions out of the sport. Players are afraid to show their personality because anything you say can be twisted.”
Tursunov said in the podcast that Kyrgios is so popular because he emotionally engages with the crowd. His ‘strong personality’, according to him, helps to sell out stadiums. He further added, “What’s the problem if a player is just throwing a middle finger to the crowd? It looks bad, the whole crowd is booing, but you just got the crowd emotionally involved,”.
When will Nick Kyrgios start his 2023 season?
The Australian abruptly pulled out of the 2023 Australian Open, much to the disappointment of his fans in Melbourne. Kyrgios revealed that a knee injury was the reason for his decision. He later underwent surgery for the injury also. Regarding the injury, Kyrgios updated fans on his recovery journey, saying on Instagram, “I’m getting there! Still a long way to go, but can do some extensions… so that’s a start!”.
Kyrgios also did not compete in the United Cup. Nick’s manager revealed that the Aussie might be able to play in the Indian Wells, scheduled to start on March 8. The ATP 1000 tournament will be his debut of the 2023 season. The Australian has only made one appearance so far this year, competing against Novak Djokovic in a charity match just before the Australian Open.
