World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev almost came to blows with a spectator after his second-round exit at the 2022 Canadian Masters in Montreal. Medvedev was the defending champion in Montreal and with a first-round bye, he directly met the in-form Australian Nick Kyrgios in the second round who got the better of the Russian over 3-sets.

Medvedev’s early loss in Montreal has opened the race for World No. 1 a little bit, putting pressure on the Russian who has a massive task of the title defence in the 2022 US Open as well later this month. With a disappointing defeat, Medvedev was frustrated and with the spectator calling Daniil a ‘Loser’ as the Russian made his exit, the tennis star went back and confronted the rowdy spectator which forced the security to intervene and separate the two involved parties as an inaudible dialogue took place between the two.

“The day I have children, I’m not going to educate them so that they say unpleasant things to people,”: Daniil Medvedev

With heckling increasing towards players with every passing tournament, Medvedev has been one of the recipients of the crowd’s booing and lack of support at particular tournaments, especially the 2022 Australian Open where Medvedev taunted the fans at every match after the constant booing he suffered. Not stranger to these things, Medvedev has however decided to confront as many of these spectators as possible and not get bullied.

“I went to see the guy and I said to him: “What is your problem? Why do you say that? You shouldn’t do that.” He barely spoke English. People around him wanted him to apologize. But that’s okay. The only thing that worries me is his father: when I called out to his son, he too started hurting me. I’m sorry, but the day I have children, I’m not going to educate them so that they say unpleasant things to people. Educate your kid instead of talking badly to me! It’s one of the first times that it happens to me in real life.

“We will say that the more famous you become, by climbing the rankings in particular, the more there is a chance that it will happen. On social networks, it is frequent, but it is the same in all sports. When someone makes fun of me, I don’t let it go, no matter who it is, no matter where it is. I will never let someone shout nasty things at me while continuing my way without saying anything. I’m going to confront him, ask him what his problem is,” said Medvedev as per Eurosport France.

With Naomi Osaka also heckled earlier this season in Indian Wells and now the case of Medvedev, the Tour officials will need to work better to make a safe environment for players where incidents like these don’t go unpunished when the spectators are not respectful towards the players.
