Roger Federer announced his retirement from tennis on 15th September 2022 to draw the curtain on a highly successful career that spanned over 24 years. The winner of 20 Grand Slam titles, Federer will retire as the man with second-most career titles, six short of Jimmy Connors‘ tally of 109.
There remains no doubt on Federer going down as one of the all-time greats in the sport. The tributes that were sent out for him upon hearing about his retirement are just one part of the legacy that the Swiss maestro leaves behind as he decides to hang up his racket finally.
Roger Federer to play his farewell event at the 2022 Laver Cup up in London
Federer announced that the 2022 Laver Cup will be his final event on the ATP Tour. The event is scheduled to be played at the O2 Arena in London from 23rd to 25th September. It will be the 5th edition of the event where Team Europe will look to win its fifth title on the trot.
The Laver Cup will also be the only tournament Federer will be playing during the 2022 season. His appearance prior to that came in his quarter-final defeat to Hubert Hurkacz in the 2021 Wimbledon Championships where he injured his knee and was forced to undergo multiple surgeries eventually ending his career.
Team Europe has not made any announcements on how will they line up and whether Federer will be playing in the Doubles as well. With the presence of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray, the farewell event of Federer is certain to be a huge event for all tennis enthusiasts.
