Wimbledon’s decision to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes from the competition because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has enraged many tennis fans. Many players were likewise disappointed by the decision, with names including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and others voicing their disappointment.
The decision was made in light of the LTA and Wimbledon’s decision to prohibit all Russian and Belarusian players from competing in this year’s Grasscourt competitions in the UK, despite Russia’s over three-month-long invasion of Ukraine. Although the ATP and WTA voiced unhappiness with the decision because the players were not participating in the conflict, the two tennis bodies in the United Kingdom refused to move and stood firm in their decision.
Novak Djokovic is not happy with Wimbledon’s impulsive decision
The ATP Tour has been opposed to this choice from the beginning, and they made the big announcement on Friday. As a result, the players will compete for the Wimbledon trophy and prize money without the opportunity to add significant points to their total. Thus, even if Novak Djokovic defends both championships in Paris and London, he will lose 2000 points from the previous season, and someone else takes his place on the ATP crown on July 11! To add to the confusion, the ATP 500 event at Queen’s and the ATP 250 event in Eastbourne will keep the ATP points.
Nonetheless, the Serb is certainly unhappy with Wimbledon’s decision, and he is also unhappy with the loss of his hard-won points. In a recent press conference, he said, “I’m affected because I’m not able to defend 4.000 points [Australia and Wimbledon, but I’m happy to see that the ATP and the Players decided to show Wimbledon that when you make a wrong decision, there are consequences.”
However, amidst all of these, Novak Djokovic has also said that he will attend this year’s Wimbledon as it was his ‘dream as a kid’. “Wimbledon is still Wimbledon, it was my dream as a kid, I never looked at it for points of prize money, but I understand the group of players affected. It’s a lose-lose situation”.
