Caroline Garcia, the 28-year-old French professional wrote history yesterday as she defeated 32-year-old Czech professional Petra Kvitova in a thrilling penultimate match of the 2022 Cincinnati Open. The win meant that Garcia won the 10th title of her career and became the first qualifier to win a WTA-1000 title she shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

It was no easy road for Caroline Garcia as she made her way to the finals and eventually to the title. After battling in the qualifiers and entering the main-draw, she breezed past some big names and superstars to make her way into the finals of the tournament. She defeated Maria Sakkari in the round of 32, Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals, and Madison Keys in the semi-finals of the tournament to cement her place in the finals which she eventually went on to win against Petra Kvitova.

With the preparations for the US Open in full swing, Caroline Garcia was quick to dispose of two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the finalsin Cincinnati. Garcia came into the match fully focused and made quick work of her opponent as she made history and clinched the 3rd Masters title of her career.

Coming from the qualifiers, Garcia had to fight hard and long before having her hands on the title. With her ranking dropping to World No. 79 at the 2022 French Open, Garcia talked about her struggle and how the perspective of the fans changes once a player starts winning. After winning the title, she said “As soon as you can get a couple of wins in a row under your belt and playing better tennis, it’s like you are a top star again, you know. Like you go from a loser to maybe one of the best players right now.

After her victory, in the post-match press conference, Garcia said, “Pure joy, I think, Just happiness. Every single win is very important. Every title is very special, [WTA] 250, 1000, it’s always very hard to describe it. It’s not happening so often, and you have to really enjoy it. I’m really grateful for this great week of tennis, and to win another title, it’s very special.” 

With the win in the Cincinnati Open, it is clear that Caroline Garcia is indeed a top star once again in the eyes of the fans and she will be looking to carry this momentum in the upcoming tournaments and the US Open as well where she will be one of the Top-20 seeds.
