When Heather Watson won her first WTA title at the Japan Open singles event in October 2012, she had become the first British woman to achieve this feat since Sara Gomer in 1988.
Watson began plying her trade in the ITF Women’s arena when she made her way to the qualifying tournament in Bath, Somerset. The results in this $10K event weren’t particularly inspiring as she struggled to win any of her matches. Her next appearance was for a $25K tournament in Jersey. There was some improvement as she emerged the victorious player against Jade Curtis, a fellow tennis player in the first round.
Despite her initial obstacles and hurdles, Watson has gone on to make a fine name for herself, winning nine titles. When she picked up the mixed-doubles title at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships with Henri Kontinen, it put her in a special bracket as she became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam title since Jo Durie in 1991, and the first to win a Wimbledon title since Durie in 1987.

Heather Watson’s parents are Michelle Watson and Ian Watson. While her mother hails from Papua New Guinea, Ian Watson is British and worked as a former managing director at Guernsey Electricity, where he worked from 1995 till the time he retired in 2010, also the year when his tennis daughter turned Pro.
Her mother, Michelle, can be spotted at the player’s box during her daughter’s matches and as is the norm for most other players, there are frequent sightings of her throughout Heather’s matches. The Watson family is going through a fantastic phase. Even though a regular customer throughout various tennis tournaments over the past decade, Heather has taken her time to advance deep into them. Now that she’s finally doing that, all her family and friends would be savoring it.
