Heather Watson
Born on 19 May 1992 in Guernsey – Heather Watson also has a brother and 2 sisters. She started playing tennis at the age of 7. Five years later when she was 12, she had gone to attend an academy in Florida. In 2006, Heather put her hands on the trophy for the British Under-14 Championships. Fast forward to one year later and she also bagged the British Under-16 Championships.
Before Wimbledon 2022, not many people knew a great deal about the 30-year-old Heather Watson. Her strong performances here in the first week in London have made people wonder a bit more about her coaching staff. Let’s get to that part soon.
Heather Watson is currently working with Alex Ward as her coach. Ward was a former tennis player himself and moved to the coaching role after retiring from the game in 2018. During his playing days, Ward reached a career-best ranking of 242, having won quite a few titles as well.

Alex had made an appearance for the 2010 Great Britain Davis Cup squad and played Wimbledon in 2016. Next year, he entered the main draw of Wimbledon after making it through the Qualifying rounds. However, his campaign was cut short by fellow Brit Kyle Edmund in the opening round.
Alex Ward moved to Spanish academies at the age of 16, after being coached by his father throughout his formative years. Having experienced both the Spanish and British tennis systems, he survived at the tour level for more than a decade. Now that he’s donned a slightly different role, he seems to take a liking at it by carving a resurgence for Heather Watson.
In a tennis podcast, Ward speaks on how the coaching stint has opened his eyes in terms of perspective. He narrows down on the differences between playing and coaching – with the latter requiring thought processes that involve combining myriad mindsets. That does not take away anything from Watson, whose experience of playing at this level has been channelized in the right manner. It would be safe to say that these results might not have been possible if there was a younger, relatively lesser experienced player with Ward. We wish the duo even greater laurels.
