Who is Martina Trevisan? The woman who surprised the tennis world at the 2022 French Open

Martina Trevisan

The ‘underdog’ story is one of the most cherished ones in all sports. A player, who isn’t known at all steps up and delivers at the big stage and becomes an overnight sensation. Tennis has always proved that an underdog could rise and shock the world, especially in women’s singles over the last few years. We saw the shocking rise of Barcora Krejcikova last year at Roland Garros who went on to win the title while Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez stepped up to the occasion at the US Open.

At the 2022 French Open, another woman was risen and shocked the world. Martina Trevisan, an Italian player made it to the second week of the French Open and not a single soul would’ve predicted this. Trevisan wasn’t particularly well-known on the tour and comes under the spotlight during the clay season. She was a very suitable game for clay with her high, top spinning forehands and baseline movement.

Trevisan is currently ranked No.59 in the WTA Ranking which is also her career-high ranking. Her best doubles ranking is No.137 as she isn’t an active doubles player. She made her grand slam main draw debut at 2020 Australian Open and followed it up by reaching the quarterfinal of the 2020 French Open- her best ever major result before the 2022 French Open. She hasn’t made past the second round at either Wimbledon, Australian Open, or US Open.

Trevisan has only one singles title to her name. Coming into the 2022 French Open, she won the Morocco Open at Rabat a week before where she dropped just one set and defeated top seed Garbine Muguruza en route to her title triumph. She played all 4 majors in 2021 and reached the second round at the French Open and the US open while bowed out of the first round of the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Meanwhile, she has won 10 ITF circuit titles and finished runner-up 8 times. Before winning the Morocco Open, she was yet to win a main draw WTA tour match on clay- which speaks volumes of her emphatic win at Rabat. At the French Open, she defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich to reach her second quarterfinal at Roland Garros in 3 years.
