Goran Ivanisevic is a former Croatian professional tennis player and current coach. He is the only player to win a Wimbledon singles title as a wildcard. He achieved this in 2001 while ranked world No. 125, after being runner-up at Wimbledon in 1992, 1994 and 1998. Ivanisevic’s career-high singles ranking was world No. 2, achieved in July 1994. Not surprisingly, Wimbledon triumph was the highlight of Goran Ivanisevic’s career and a year later in 2002.

He temporarily retired following shoulder surgery. He returned briefly in 2003 but shortly after that, he was to become a regular, only on the masters and exhibition tours. He coached Marin Cilic from September 2013 to July 2016, leading Cilic to his only major title to date at the 2014 US Open. He has been coaching Novak Djokovic since 2019. Ivanisevic was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2020.

Goran Ivanisevic questions the double standards of federations around Novak Djokovic’s name

It seems as if the reigning champion of Wimbledon, Djokovic will have to take his name back from the Montreal Masters early in August because Canada’s health minister has issued advice that no such exemptions be given in the case of Djokovic who remained ‘unvaccinated’ and is still not planning to get it soon. Novak Djokovic’s possibility to play at the US Open in late August is still unclear because the USA also has similar regulations to its neighbouring state.

And the Tennis Federation in the USA has also not given any such exemptions for the 3-times US Open winner, it’s only a month and some days left for the tournament to start. Ivanisevic in his capacity as coach of Djokovic raised questions about the tennis federations, where he asked for the reason his student cannot play at the US Open.

Goran said, “In the Aus Open, French Open and Wimbledon there were players who tested positive for Covid-19 but still competed. Then why can’t Djokovic play in the US Open?” questioning the Grand Slams as players continued to test positive at the Grand Slams and accordingly were forced to withdraw or could play provided they were negative before the match. At the recently concluded Wimbledon, Matteo Berrettini, Roberto Bautista Agut and Marin Cilic all tested positive on the tournament site and Ivanisevic hinted at this particular situation.
