The world is all too well aware of the feud between Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams which has resulted in making several headlines over the years. However, the neglected part of the controversy between them is the question of why and what made the rivalry between them grow and fuel the fire.
Critics have been under the distinct notion that the Russian champion’s attack on Williams is unnecessary considering she earns more than any female through endorsements and altogether her mouthing off at her can cause irreparable damage to her brand especially when she hit a swing below the belt towards the American star by slamming her love life and bringing up her rumored relationship with Patrick Mouratoglou, questioning her morals.

The Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams beef involves a very lopsided rivalry
In an autobiography by Maria Sharapova, Unstoppable: My Life So Far, although, the book is extensively about its author, the texts talk a lot about someone else, Serena Williams. Naturally, the book acquired loads of controversies considering her fixation with Williams encompassed more than just tennis but attacked the American on her alleged locker room statements at the 2014 Wimbledon. Maria later in an interview highlighted Serena’s rumored relationship with Patrick implying how he is getting a divorce although being married and having kids.
Things took a turn for both the stars when Grigor Dimitrov got caught up in the between. At the time, the Bulgarian tennis player was dating Sharapova when Williams was headlined for allegedly thrash-talking about her and her relationship. “She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’m so lucky- it’s so boring. She’s still not going to be invited to cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with a guy with a black heart, go for it,” quoted Serena allegedly talking about the Russians’ relationship with Dimitrov who was also rumored to be her ex.
Later when Sharapova was asked about commenting on Serena, she stated that “on the court, I have the utmost respect for her, I really do,” and when asked to comment on her thoughts on her off the court she quoted “It’s different.” Observes thought the two players avoided each other in Brisbane 2014, the beef between the two existed behind the scenes, flaring up their controversy which never took a rest.
