Matteo Berrettini cruised into the quarter-finals of the 2022 US Open after defeating Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Round of 16 in a five-set match where both the players put up some incredible level of tennis, it was the Italian who had the slight edge over the Spaniard. He got off to a good start when he defeated Andy Murray 6-4, 6-6, 6-7, 6-3 in the third-round encounter at Flushing Meadows.

He had a tough time at Wimbledon when he was found to be COVID-19-positive in the final moments ahead of his match and hence had to skip playing at SW19 even after winning the titles at the Stuttgart Open and Queen’s Club Championship. He had faced early exits at the hard-court tournaments that are the build-up to the US Open. The Australian Open semi-finalist will face Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals, the fifth seed in the tournament.
