Why Tennis legend Roger Federer dropped out of school at 16?

Roger Federer, the 41-year-old Swiss tennis professional is undoubtedly one of the greatest tennis players of all time. With 20 grand slam titles to his name, Federer has etched his name in the history of this sport among the all-time elites.

The Swiss icon broke a lot of hearts yesterday as he announced his imminent retirement from tennis. Federer took to social media to share the saddening news with millions of his fans across the globe. Federer wrote a heartfelt and emotional letter as he announced his retirement, he expressed his feelings and love for tennis which has given him so much over the years.

He announced that he would be retiring after competing in the upcoming Laver Cup. The first player to win 20 grand slam titles had to overcome many obstacles to get to where he is right now. Federer also had to sacrifice his education at just 16 years of age to be able to focus more on professionally playing tennis.

When Roger Federer turned 16 years of age and did not require to be registered for a school, the Swiss professional chose not to attend any college. He completed the 9 months of mandatory shcool education and decided to completely focus on tennis as a career after that.

Talking about his education as quoted by Tennis World, Federer once said, “I left home at 14 years old, stopped school at 16, and went on tour. Had a hard time understanding what hard work was, but eventually, I figured it out, thankfully, early enough.

Federer did recieve an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Medicine at University of Basel. He recieved the honor for  ‘increasing the international reputation of Basel and Switzerland, as well as for his function as a role model athlete, who encourages many people around the world to be physically more active and thus contributes to the promotion of health.’
