The great veteran of the sport, Kirsten Flipkens will play her final tournament in the singles, as she has already announced her retirement from this mode of the game. She faced Jaimee Fourlis in the first round tie and Flipkens lost serve in the very first game of the match, but came back to break it back to level the score in the opening set. She fell behind once again, but reacted quickly to tie the scores at 3-3. Fourlis served to stay in the set at 6-5 and she kept on fighting but at the end feel short to the veteran. Flipkens was off to a flying start in the second set, jumping to a 5-1 lead in no time. Serving for a place in the second round, she had two match points but got broken. However, Fourlis was unable to make the most of this stumble, as the Belgian broke for the final time to win 7-5, 6-2.

On the other hand, Simona Halep faced Karolina Muchova in the first round, who was in brilliant form and Muchova took an early lead to go 3-1 up in the first set. Muchova was unable to hold onto the lead as with Halep broke her serve once again in the final game of the set to win the set. The second set started off in the same fashion with Halep taking a 4-1 lead, which was too much for Muchova to take and at the end Halep outplayed her time and again winning the match 6-3, 6-2.
