World No. 2 Rafael Nadal had to take on Francisco Cerundolo in the first-round match-up. He had to work his sleeves-up to find a win and it took him four sets to progress to the second round. Next he faced Ricardas Berankis in the second round, and it was quite a comfortable and easy match for him. With Rafa facing no trouble whatsoever in the first set, he brushed aside Berankis with no scare. The second set went on with the same fashion with Rafa getting Berankis with ease. But Berankis uplifted his spirits and played brilliantly in the third set to finally opt for a comeback and made the set to his name. Nadal didn’t let Berankis’ confidence get the better of him and closed the match by winning the set and progressed to the next round with a 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win.

On the other hand Lorenzo Sonego faced Denis Kudla in the first-round match-up. He had to battle hard and it took him five sets to beat Kudla. Then he took on Hugo Gaston in the second-round tie. With both the players battling it hard in the first set, it went in the tir-breakers and Sonego finally made the set to his name. Sonego then never looked back and also secured the second set and eventually won the third set despite Gaston showing some signs of fightbacks, with Sonego finally winning it by 7-6(4), 6-4, 6-4.
