Ricardas Berankis had to face last year’s semifinalist Sam Querrey in the first round and showed impressive character by beating him without dropping a set. He started the second set by playing in the similar manner as he did in the first set by breaking Querrey’s serve in the final game. He took a 3-0 lead in the third set and held onto it and eventually won the match 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 which was his fourth career victory at Wimbledon and he matched his best result in the tournament by reaching the second round.

On the other hand, World No. 2 Rafael Nadal is on a hunt for his thrid grand slam of the year as he started the tournament by facing Francisco Cerundolo in the first set. He went up an early break to lead 3-1 in the opening set, but couldn’t hold onto the score and Francisco fought back. Nadal saved three break points to for a hold at 5-4 later on and broke Francisco’s serve in the next game to win the set. A solitary break of serve was enough for Rafa to win the second set as well but Francisco fought back immediately in the third set and secured another break of serve to lead 5-3 and finally won the set. Francisco took a 3-1 lead in the fourth set and had four break point chances to extend it but Nadal had other plans and was all over his opponent and eventually won the match by 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
