World No. 16 Simona Halep faced Karolina Muchova in the first round, who was in brilliant form and Muchova took an early lead to go 3-1 up in the first set. Then she went on to face the toughest challenge in World No. 4 Paula Badosa and she beat her in straight sets. In the quarterfinals, she faced Amanda Anisimova and she completely dominated her winning the match 2-6, 4-6 and progressed into the semi-finals.

On the other hand, Elena Rybakina has had a great season so far having started the season by reaching the final of the Adelaide International 1 losing to fellow Australian Ashleigh Barty in straight sets. Rybakina faced Coco Vandeweghe in the first round and beat her comfortably in straight sets. She then beat Bianca Andreescu in the second-round tie in the same fashion and with ease. She then faced Zheng Qinwen in the third-round tie and it was nothing but a straight-sets comfortable win for Elena. She then beat Petra Martic in straight sets to book a place in the quarters. She then triumphed over Ajla Tomljanović where she came back to win 6-4, 2-6, 3-6 to progress to the semifinals.
