Andy Murray vs Stefanos Tsitsipas: Preview
Murray is coming off a dominant display against countryman Ryan Peniston in round 1, winning their match with the scoreline 6 – 3, 6 – 0, 6 – 1. He has had an encouraging record on grass this season, with 2 back – to – back titles at the Challenger level at Surbiton and Nottingham. The Briton however, failed to make a mark at the ATP 500 at Queen’s. This proved to be a crucial error as it denied him being seeded at this year’s Wimbledon.
Tsitsipas on the other hand, faced a stricter challenge in round 1 in the form of Dominic Thiem. In a match affected by rain delays, Tsitsipas prevailed against the Austrian in 5 tough sets. Tsitsipas’ grass court record this year has been largely underwhelming. He has bowed out in the first or second round in all 3 grass tournaments he competed in prior to Wimbledon, including failing to defend his Mallorca Open title.
The pair have split their 2 previous encounters. Tsitsipas won in the first round of the US Open 2021 against Murray in 5 tough sets. Murray then beat Tsitsipas on grass at the Stuttgart Open 2022.
Andy Murray vs Stefanos Tsitsipas: Prediction
While Murray’s exceptional record at Wimbledon cannot be denied, it has to be noted that his movement has taken a huge toll since his hip injury. Tsitsipas, an able baseliner himself, will want to make the Briton move on the court as much as he can, bringing in a mix of shots. Despite the disadvantage, Murray is largely more experienced on grass than the Greek and can notch up a win. His dominant display against Peniston in round 1 suggests a return of form for the legendary Briton.
Match prediction: Murray wins in 5 close sets.
