Defending champion Elena Rybakina breezed through her Round of 16 encounter against Beatriz Haddad Maia, breaking little sweat as the Brazilian was forced to retire midway through the first set. In fact, the Kazakh had faced little difficulty since dropping the first set in her Round 1 match with American Shelby Rogers. Routine straight-set victories over Frenchwoman Alize Cornet and local girl Katie Boulter followed in Round 2 and Round 3, respectively. Rybakina’s match against Beatriz Haddad Maia was touted to be an interesting one to watch, given that the Brazilian had already logged two wins against the third seed this year.

Ons Jabeur has been having a great run at Wimbledon this year, not just on the court but off the court too, as the Tunisian got an opportunity to meet one of her sporting heroes, David Beckham. Jabeur was in supreme form as she thrashed two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets, losing just three games in the process.

Like Rybakina, Jabeur too has had a smooth passage to the quarterfinals, dropping just one set thus far. She made light work of Magdalena Fręch in the first round, before beating Chinese player Bai Zhuoxuan in her Round 2 match. In the third round, however, the sixth seed was taken the distance by 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu.

The contest looks quite balanced, as was the case when the pair clashed in last year’s final. The duo have split their previous four meetings evenly, tying the head-to-head at two wins each.

The Tunisian, seeking to make history as the first Arab woman to win a Grand Slam singles title, was tantalizingly close to realizing her dream when she snatched the first set in last year’s final. However, the tables turned in the next two sets, as the Kazakh made history on her own, as she became the first player from Kazakhstan to win a Grand Slam title.

Rybakina, who possesses a strong serve and powerful groundstrokes, will face a very crafty opponent in Jabeur, whose jaw-dropping drop shots with a high degree of precision have had the crowd in raptures. The match looks delicately poised given their fairly similar journeys to get thus far, and it could go either way depending on who manages to maintain better consistency over the course of the entire match.

This one is one of the tougher ones to call but backed by her richer experience, Jabeur is likely to edge it in three sets, in what would be a reversal of their scoreline when they last met in the final of Wimbledon 2022.

Prediction: Ons Jabeur to win in 3 sets
