Pegula started her year by reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. Subsequently, she reached the finals in Doha, as well as semifinal runs in Dubai and Miami before the clay season commenced. After impressing on clay with a semifinal run in Charleston and a quarterfinal appearance in Madrid, Pegula made her way to the grass court, but she played only in Eastbourne. Now she has reached the quarterfinal of SW19 for the first time in her career. Currently, she is World No. 4 in the WTA rankings.

On the other hand, Marketa Vondrousova, known for her notable achievements at the 2019 French Open and the Tokyo Olympics, has made a strong comeback at Wimbledon. Ranked at 42nd in the WTA, Vondrousova has faced certain injuries, surgeries and has been quite inconsistent lately. This year, she reached the semis in Linz. Subsequently, she made her way to the quarterfinal in the Adelaide International 1 and Berlin Open. This has boosted her morale, which is evident in her game play.

This is the first time both players will be facing each other.

Vondrousova, a talented left-hander, may upset Pegula’s rhythm with her varied shot selection. The Czech player’s bursts of power, along with her finesse and diversity, can make Pegula’s game difficult. Her ability to vary the pace of her shots and include drop shots may be especially useful on the low-bouncing grass surface.

However, putting Pegula on the defensive will not be easy. The American is noted for her clean and precise ball striking, which has helped her become one of the tour’s most accurate hitters. Vondrousova will have to find methods to disturb Pegula’s game and put her in awkward positions.

Vondrousova’s ability to serve will be crucial. She struggled with her first-serve percentage in the first set of her prior encounter against Marie Bouzkova, which contributed to her loss. She will need to increase her serving and sustain a higher first-serve percentage throughout the match to be successful against Pegula.

Vondrousova has a decent chance of reaching her first Wimbledon semifinal if she starts strong, controls her errors, and maintains a high level of play. Pegula’s steadiness and good baseline game, on the other hand, cannot be overlooked.

Prediction: Jessica Pegula to win in 3 sets
