Marketa Vondrousova created history on Saturday as she became the first unseeded woman to win the Wimbledon title. The Czech shocked World no. 6 Ons Jabeur as she cruised to the victory 6-4, 6-4. The world no. 42 also became the lowest-ranked champion ever at the All England Club.

Prior to this, she had only managed to reach the second round of Wimbledon in 2021, marking her best performance at the tournament. However, a significant setback in the form of a six-month injury kept her out of last year’s competition, leaving her uncertain about her ability to regain her previous high level of play.

In the post-match interview, she said, “When I was coming back, I didn’t know what’s going to happen, if I can play at that level again, this seems impossible. On grass, I didn’t play well before. It was the most impossible grand slam for me to win, so I didn’t even think of it.” She continued, “When we came, I was like, ‘try to win couple of matches’. Now this happened. It’s crazy.”

Her track record on grass courts prior to this achievement was less than stellar, with only four victories and eleven defeats. This puts her in a unique category alongside Martina Hingis, who is the only other champion to have won fewer matches on grass before ultimately claiming the trophy.

In a remarkable turn of events, she had only won three games before securing her first Wimbledon title. Interestingly, Vondrousova had already encountered Jabeur in the second round of this year’s Australian Open, where she emerged victorious with a score of 6-1, 5-7, 6-1. Despite lacking the support of the Centre Court crowd, who clearly favored Ons Jabeur, she defied all expectations and emerged as the champion, earning significant prize money along with the prestigious Major title.

The 24-year-old will receive a whooping £ 2.35 million for winning the 2023 Wimbledon. Despite the disappointment of losing in the finals, runner-up Ons Jabeur will receive £1.175m. The semi-finalists Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina will receive €600,000 each.

The total prize money pool available in the All England Club this year is £32,154,000. Going down the order, the quarter-finalists will receive £340,000. The ones who exited in the fourth round would earn £207,000, and the third round would get £131,000.

The second and first-round losers would earn £85,000 and £55,000. The format is the same for the Men’s singles. The winner of the doubles tournament would win £600,000, and the runners-up would earn £300,000.
