This year’s Wimbledon has seen multiple invasions by ‘Just Stop Oil’ protestors ever since its commencement on Wednesday. This has forced The All-England Club to take a tough stance. It has been known that the Club is planning to ban all the protestors from Wimbledon for a lifetime.
The protestors invaded the tournament during the matches of Grigor Dimitrov and Sho Shimabukoro, as well as Katie Boulter and Daria Saville in court 18. They marched into the court and threw pieces of Jigsaw puzzles and orange confetti on the court.
As expected, this halted the match for several minutes. One of the protestors is a 68-year-old man named Simone Edwards, who identifies himself as a tennis fan and has attended several matches previously. Edwards stated in an interview that he aligns himself with the cause because he wants to see a better future for the next generation.
These multiple protests in just a day have raised questions regarding the security provided by The All-England Club. Critics believe that if anyone can storm onto the court and intervene in a match, they can also injure the players and the crowd.
This has made the All-England Club take a firm decision. The Club plans on banning the protestors for a lifetime, but the question is: how many protestors will you keep banning? The protests by ‘Just Stop Oil’ have been going on for a while, and it doesn’t look like they are going to stop anytime soon. A better decision would be to just increase the security of the courts for the safety of everyone.
Not the first time ‘Just Stop Oil’ has breached a match
For the uninitiated, Just Stop Oil is an environmental activist group in the United Kingdom. It uses civil resistance, vandalism, and direct action to force the British government to commit to halting new fossil fuel licensing and production. The UK has seen several protests by the group over the years.
A man walked onto the Crucible table at the Snooker World Championships in April and released a packet of orange dye, causing a brief interruption. Furthermore, two people ran onto the outfield during England’s second test match against Australia, with one being carried off by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.
One famous incident was last year in October when two people from the group threw tomato soup on Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflower painting in the National Gallery in London. The protestors then glued themselves to the wall and waited for the police to arrest them. Similarly, last year during the Laver Cup, a protestor wearing an ‘End UK Private Jets’ t-shirt, set himself on fire on the court. Although it’s not known if he was from the ‘Just Stop Oil’ group.
