First Round action at the All England Club and Wimbledon has come up with some really crowd-pulling matches in the draw. One of them is between fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and Austrian Dominic Thiem. A few years ago, this would be a semi-encounter in any Slam. However, with the unfortunate injury issues that Thiem has had to deal with in the last couple of years, he has been pushed down the rankings. As a result, he will face one of the world’s best players in the opening round of the Championships.

Dominic Thiem hasn’t really had a season of his choice. He has mostly played challenger events and hasn’t had any great success in those matches as well. He has usually encountered elite players on tour in the early rounds and has consistently failed to cross them. Tsitsipas again would be a tough task for the Austrian, and looking at his 2023 season, his chances to emerge victorious seem bleak.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, on the other hand, has had a mixed season so far. He started the season well with an excellent run to the Australian Open final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. However, post that, he has been able to make only one final at Barcelona against Carlos Alcaraz. His 2023 season has also been filled with multiple early-round exits, and his grass warm-up events have been a disaster.

Thiem and Tsitsipas have faced each other nine times previously. The Austrian leads the head-to-head 5-4. However, all those five wins came before he faced the injury crisis. The most recent encounter between the two took place at the Madrid Masters this year. Thiem took the first set 6-3 and impressed many; however, Tsitsipas fought back well and took the match in three sets with the final scoreline reading 3-6, 6-1, 7-6.

As Tsitsipas will lock horns with Thiem, it promises to be a mouthwatering first-round clash. As mentioned earlier, a few years ago, this would have been an ideal semi-final match. However, with Thiem’s recent injury run, he has lost major ground on the world rankings and has been in dismal form. Both players have had average seasons, with Thiem certainly having a worse one than his opponent. However, when it comes to grass, both evenly match each other.

Both players have struggled on the grass, with their best result at Wimbledon being a fourth-round appearance. This would give Thiem a lot of confidence in his chances to hand his opponent an upset. However, it’s safer to back Tsitsipas in this encounter as the Greek has had a few deep runs this year.

Prediction: Stefanos Tsitsipas to win in four sets.
