Tennis legend Venus Williams is one of the flag bearers of women’s tennis who has inspired millions around the world. She had returned to Wimbledon after a gap of twelve months. But couldn’t go past the first round at any of the tournaments. Despite her underwhelming performances and with being ranked outside the Top 1000, she received a wild card entry at the 2023 Australian Open.

She has won 49 singles WTA titles and 7 Grand Slam titles. The former World No 1 tops the list of the most singles titles won by an active player in the Open Era. She, along with her sister Serena Williams, is an undefeated pair in the Grand Slam finals. They both have together won 14 doubles Grand Slams and 3 Olympic Gold medals.

Venus Williams is a 2-time finalist at the Australian Open but has lost both times to her sister. Along with it, it also marks her 22nd appearance at Down Under in her career of more than two decades. The 42-year-old made her debut Grand Slam in Melbourne way back in 1998 when she was 18 years of age.

However, she made her professional debut in 1994 at the age of 14 and hasn’t retired yet from the Tour. She is also one of only two active players to have reached the singles finals of all four Grand Slams, along with Serena Williams. Though the tennis player is quite excited to be playing again in Australia, people on social media were not happy with the decision.

They mocked the American player for taking away the place of a deserving candidate and even suggested that she should have been denied in the first place. Despite playing for so many years, she hasn’t managed to clinch a single title in Australia. The last time, she played in the finals of the tournament had been back in 2017, and was defeated in straight sets by Serena Williams. She hopes to make the most out of the opportunity in the new season. Her last singles match was at the US Open against Belgian player Alison Van Uytvanck.
