Gauff headed into the China Open on the back of a sensational record this season. She has won the Citi Open, the Cincinnati Open, and the US Open in 2023, and she is currently on a dream run this season, without a doubt. She defeated Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova without any difficulty in the first round of the ongoing China Open. On hard courts, Coco has won 87 matches and lost 43 matches, which makes her win percentage 67% on hard courts.

Petra Martic, on the other hand, has not had a great season in 2023. Her best performance in the Grand Slam events this year came at Wimbledon, where she reached the third round, while her best overall performance came at the Miami Open, where she reached the quarterfinals. On hard courts, she has a win-loss record of 104–116, which makes her win percentage on the surface 47%. Martic defeated Sorana Cîrstea of Romania to move on to Round 2 of the 2023 China Open.
