WTA China Open 2023: Live Streaming, Broadcast and TV Schedule details
The WTA China Open will be held from 30 September to 8 October.
National Tennis Center, Beijing.
Tennis returns to the China Open 2023 in Beijing for the first time since 2019. The last few editions of the tournament were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China, as well as the fallout following the disappearance of the Chinese WTA player Peng Shuai. Naomi Osaka won the last edition of the tournament defeating the former world no.1 Ashleigh Barty (3-6, 6-3, 6-2) to win her second WTA 1000 title, in 2019.
The women’s entry list is packed and features almost the whole of the top 50 in the WTA rankings. Every player featured in the WTA top-16 ranking is participating in the tournament. The top 4 seeds for the tournament are – Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in that order. The WTA is trialing performance-byes in the tournament which means that top-4 seeds don’t automatically get a bye.
Jessica Pegula, Maria Sakkari, Veronika Kudermetova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova have been handed byes for their semi-final appearance in the ongoing Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. US Open champion Coco Gauff and the runner-up and world no.1 Aryna Sabalenka will return to the tour for the first time since their encounter in the final of the last Grand Slam event of the year. 4-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek will make her first appearance at the event.
The total prize pool for the women’s tournament in Beijing is $8,127,389, which is the highest of any WTA tour-level event with the exception of WTA Finals. The champion would earn a pay cheque of $1,324,000 and win 1000 ranking points. The tournament might decide the final 4 places for the WTA Finals, to be held in Cancun, Mexico.
