Coco Gauff has had a very ordinary season so far. She bowed out of the first round of the Australian Open and once again lost her opening match in Dubai. She then raised her level and reached the quarterfinal in Doha before having a very mediocre Golden Swing where she lost in the second round at Indian Wells and Round of 16 at Miami. The 18-year-old started her clay season with an opening-round loss at Stuttgart. This week in Madrid, she blasted past Anna Karolína Schmiedlová in the first round and then defeated Yulia Putintseva in the second round in three sets 6-1,2-6,6-4.

Returning from injury, Simona Halep has done pretty well this season so far. She made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open before reaching the semifinal of the Dubai Tennis Championships. She then had a semifinal finish at Indian Wells where she lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. On clay this week, Halep has been very dominant. She stormed past Shuai Zhang in the opening round before upsetting second seed Paula Badosa in the second round in straight sets 6-3,6-1.
