WTA Stuttgart Open 2022: Women’s Singles Draw Preview and Prediction

The WTA Stuttgart Open 2022 will be the second WTA-500 tournament of the Golden Swing of the WTA Tour for the 250 and above categories. It will be the 44th edition of the tournament and along with the big cheque, it will also present the champion with a brand new Porsche car with the automobile company being the sponsor for the event and also has the stadium named after it. Ash Barty was the defending champion in both the singles and doubles events but her retirement will see the event without any defending champion.

Women’s Singles Draw Analysis and Prediction

Top Half

Top-seed Iga Swiatek gets a first round bye and is likely to start her campaign against Viktorija Golubic who starts against qualifier Eva Lys. Italians Jasmine Paolini and Camila Giorgi will meet in the first round with the winner set to take on the winner from the clash between 8th seeded Emma Raducanu and qualifier Storm Sanders. The world could finally see Iga and Emma clash for the first time if both reach the quarter-finals.

4th seeded Maria Sakkari also has a bye in the first round and will take on the winner of the match between former champion and wildcard entrant Laura Siegemund and Tamara Zidansek. Liudmila Samsonova starts against qualifier Chloe Paquet while former champions Petra Kvitova and 6th seeded Karolina Pliskova battle in the opening round.

Bottom Half

5th seeded Anett Kontaveit starts against former champion and home favourite Angelique Kerber with the winner set to take on the victorious player from the clash between Shuai Zhang and Ekaterina Alexandrova. Wildcard entrant Jule Niemeier will start against Bianca Andreescu who makes her season debut and the winner will meet 3rd seeded Aryna Sabalenka who gets a first-round bye.

2nd seeded Paula Badosa also has a bye in the first round and will likely take on Elena Rybakina who starts against qualifier Nastasja Schunk. Daria Kasatkina will take on Coco Gauff with the winner set to meet the survivor of the heavyweight clash between 7th seeded Ons Jabeur and Marketa Vondrousova.

Second Semi-Final Prediction: Paula Badosa vs Anett Kontaveit

Semifinals

Swiatek and Sakkari could renew their rivalry with Maria currently leading the Pole 3-2 in the head-to-head. Swiatek however has won both of their previous two meetings after the Greek won the first three clashes. Sakkari has been highly inconsistent and Iga has been on a roll being on a 17-match winning streak currently and could defeat Sakkari.

Badosa and Kontaveit have met prior only once when the Estonian overcame Badosa during her title run in Ostrava last season. Kontaveit is yet to play on Clay this season and it could be in favour of the Spaniard who is looking in great form this season.

Final

Iga and Paula have one win against each other so far in their 2 clashes and it could be another highly anticipated clash. With Iga at the top spot and Paula into her career-high ranking as well, it certainly promises to be a great final between two of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour. Iga looks the favourite given her brilliant form coming into the tournament and considering the fact that Clay is her favourite surface, her chances increase furthermore.
