“You better accept it!” John McEnroe tells Iga Swiatek to adjust and learn to play with ‘different balls’ at the US Open
John McEnroe and Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek, the world number one, is one of the best upcoming talents who will be one of the favorites at the US Open and her performances will be looked upon surely given the fact that she has already won six titles this year including the French Open. But her performance started dipping after her loss in the third round to Alize Cornet in straight sets at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship which ended her 37-match winning streak. She also had a fantastic season on the clay court but her 18-match winning streak got a full stop with her loss in the quarter-finals to Caroline Gracia at the Poland Open.
The Polish player is struggling to keep up with her consistency as she did not have a good start to the WTA events that lead up to the US Open 2022. She had a devastating loss to Madison Keys in the second round at the Cincinnati Open and Beatriz Haddad Maia in the third round at the Canadian Open. She will be looking to get back to winning ways at the US Open in hope of winning another Grand Slam title to claim her top spot in the rankings since she became number one after Ashleigh Barty‘s sudden retirement.
“She’s an incredible athlete and will figure it out!” John McEnroe advises Iga Swiatek on adapting to the conditions of the US Open
John McEnroe, the former American player who is also a sports critic, advised Iga Swiatek to learn to deal with the use of different balls after she expressed her anger at the disparity of balls used for women’s and men’s matches. McEnroe suggested the two-time Grand Slam champion will be one of the favorites going into the US Open 2022. He said “Maybe that’s just letting out some nerves. But whatever it is, she’s got to come to grips with it because she’s still obviously one of the favorites, or the favorite, even though she hasn’t done well, she’s still going to be the No. 1 seed and people are going to expect you to do well.“
He added “She’s an incredible athlete and I believe that she’ll figure it out and she’ll win majors. I believe she’ll win some on a faster hard court. I don’t think that she’s only going to win on clay. You are always feeling the stress of wanting to do your best. And so you need ways to get rid of that stress in a way so she may feel like maybe they are a little lighter. So that’s something that you have to accept. Maybe they’ll change it, but until they do, you better accept it because if you let it get in your head then it’s going to cause a problem.“
