“You can always improve” Jessica Pegula expresses her ‘disbelief’ over her record breaking feat and reflects back on her journey

Jessica Pegula

Jessica Pegula is one of the best talents on the tennis circuit. She has been part of the WTA tour for quite some time. She is currently ranked at No.5 in the current WTA rankings. Earlier this morning WTA released the list of players who have qualified to play in the WTA Finals tournament. ‘Elite 8’ as it is known, are the top women players who have performed outstandingly at the WTA tour. Jessica Pegula is one of them. She will be playing against other top-ranked players to win the coveted WTA trophy.

But this is not the most important news. WTA has shared the news that the American has recorded the highest number of WTA 1000 wins, i.e., 37 in the last two seasons. In the latest victory, she defeated fellow American World No.50, Sloane Stephens, in the quarter-final match of the Guadalajara Open. Guadalajara Open is a WTA 1000 tournament.

However, Jessica could not believe the news. The 28-year-old expressed her shock at pulling off such a feat on Twitter. She referred to a previous instance of her terrible performance and advised people to always have hope that they can get better.

“If you told me 5 years ago when I couldn’t string 2 matches together that I would have this stat…you can always improve, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise,” the World No.5 tweeted.

Jessica Pegula is looking to win her first WTA singles title this year

Jessica Pegula is in red-hot form. She is ticking all the checkboxes right. She has also won 5 WTA doubles titles this year. She must be very proud of achieving this tremendous record.

But there is one thing that must be bothering her. She has consistently failed in the past few years to lift a major WTA singles title. The last title she won was the Washington Open in 2019 where she defeated Camila Giorgi. It is the only WTA singles title she has won in her entire career.

Such stats do not give testimony to the immense talent and the capabilities she has. Also, 37 WTA 1000 wins are worthless if they do not translate into a WTA title or grand slam win. This year too, she started her season well by reaching the quarter-final round of the Australian Open. She defeated Anhelina Kalinina, Bernarda Pera, Nuria Párrizas Díaz, and Maria Sakkari in the previous rounds. But she defeated Australian Ashleigh Barty in the quarter-final.

She then participated in the Miami Open reaching the semi-final round by defeating Anhelina Kalinina and Paula Badosa but then lost to Iga Swiatek. Pegula then reached the final of the Madrid Open eventually losing to Ons Jabeur. She then played the quarter-final match against Iga Swiatek in the French Open but lost to her in straight sets.

She then crashed out of Wimbledon in the third round. The American made it to the semi-final falling to Simona Halep in the Canadian Open. She then reached the quarter-final of Cincinnati Masters defeating Marta Kostyuka and Emma Raducanu in the previous rounds.

Her hopes of winning the WTA singles title were dashed once again as she lost out to Iga Swiatek in the semi-final of the San Diego Open. She has reached the semi-final round of the Guadalajara Open. In the semi-final match, she will be playing against the former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka.

This time Jessica Pegula would like to win the match and advance to the next round of the tournament. She is hoping to lift her first WTA singles trophy this year before she competes in the WTA Finals tournament.
