“You don’t want to be in his box,” Nick Kyrgios’ mother reveals how chaotic it gets handling her son’s antics during a match
Nick Kyrgios and his mother
Nick Kyrgios has recently concluded his career-best run at a grand slam by reaching the final of Wimbledon this year. The Australian lost to an inspired Novak Djokovic in a tight four-setter 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-7(3).
His run at Wimbledon was a stark reminder of the polarizing figure that he is. His campaign saw many brilliant performances as well as a host of violations, complaints, outbursts, and swearing. Kyrgios is always known to express himself during his matches which at times could get very ugly- both for fans and his box.
‘I actually didn’t watch the game’: Nick Kyrgios’s mother
Nick Kyrgios’ mother Nill left television personality Karl Stefanovic in stitches after revealing why watching her son compete on the tennis court is “not a good experience”. “You don’t want to be in his box,” she confessed. “You really don’t, because you really don’t know when to stand and when to clap and when to shout.”
In addition to frequently ranting at friends and family in the player’s box and accusing a spectator in the front row of consuming “700 drinks,” Kyrgios made headlines for his characteristic theatrics and outbursts. However, Kyrgios’ mother didn’t watch a single point of the Wimbledon final, revealing she was too nervous, and went to bed instead.
“I actually didn’t watch the game,” she told Today on Tuesday morning. “I haven’t watched any of his games. I had a very good sleep … I actually watched him go on court. I love that, you know, watching him walking through Wimbledon, just that atmosphere. I love watching him walk onto the court and just see the reaction of the spectators. I watched it until I think when they started warming up and I said, ‘Good luck’ and I went to bed.”
