21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic will start his campaign at the Year-end Championship by playing against Stefanos Tsitsipas. He will be aiming for his sixth ATP title in Turin, equaling the record with Swiss legend Roger Federer. Ahead of the start of the tournament, he contemplated the challenges he might encounter while having less room for any sort of errors.
The Serb got qualified for the ATP Finals for a record 15th time and his last title was in the year 2015. During a press conference, he appreciated the atmosphere in Turin and all the unconditioned support and love he has been receiving from fans for the upcoming matches at the championship. He further admitted the fact that he would have to be at his best from the start even with fewer warm-up matches to offer. The Wimbledon champion hopes to have a pleasant week in the final ATP tournament of the year.
“You can still lose a match and win a tournament which I think is great, but as the guys were mentioning super high intensity from the start. You have to play a top player, you know, no room for warm-up matches so to say you know you have to be at your highest of abilities from the first point and I think Turin is a great city to host this event. Last year, we had fantastic attendance for all the matches. Italy is a country that respects and nurtures the culture of sport and tennis as well of course, so it’s a pleasure to be here and you know hopefully I can have a good week,” said Novak Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic reveals his form and level of fitness ahead of the ATP Finals
Djokovic was forced to miss the Australian Open and all the tournaments in the North American swing due to his unvaccinated status against COVID-19. Despite all the challenges and a series of missed opportunities, he has been flawless with his performances after the US Open by making it to three consecutive finals while winning two out of them. He remained undefeated with his 13-match winning streak until his loss in the finals of the 2022 Paris Masters.
He contemplated his form and fitness for the ATP Finals. He admitted that he doesn’t feel as young as other players while acknowledging his performances in the last few months and being in great shape ever since his triumph at Wimbledon. As per the Serbian legend himself, he is currently entirely focused on the challenge that lies ahead in his professional journey.
