World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas‘ wait for his maiden Grand Slam title got extended after the Greek was defeated in the 4th round of the 2022 French Open by 19-year old Holger Rune who was making his Roland Garros debut. Stef was seen as one of the title favourites after the draw ceremony concluded as he was in the bottom half of the draw which was a top-heavy draw with 4-5 real contenders in the top half.

Stef however couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity and had to see Rafael Nadal go on to lift the title for the 14th time in his 18th appearance which was also his 22nd career Grand Slam title. Upon winning the title, Nadal revealed that he took injections to numb his pain in the foot in every match after his second-round win to push his body and not withdraw from one of his favourite tournaments.

With Nadal being criticised for forcing his body to chase titles, Stef also spoke that how he had taken a similar injection during one of his appearances at the Year-End Championships. “There was a match I thought I couldn’t play because I felt too much pain. Not to the point of Rafa, but I had a similar situation at the ATP Finals. I felt extreme pain in my leg. They gave me an injection and I played one of the best matches of my life,” said Stef as per Italian journalist Mario Boccardi.

The comment did not however sit well with many netizens who have expressed their disapproval towards both Stef and Rafa for not being the ideal examples for preferring titles over their well being. Some have gone on to say that it is a form of doping and the players have found a loophole to use it.
