“You won’t go the distance,” Marion Bartoli reckons Nick Kyrgios needs to make significant changes in his on-court behavior
Marion Bartoli and Nick Kyrgios
Nick Kyrgios has been on a roll with his incredible performances this season with a fair share of hits and misses but he had a disappointing and shocking elimination at the Cincinnati Open where he lost in the second round to Taylor Fritz in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in just 51 minutes of play. Coming into the tournament, he was fresh from a loss in the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz. He had won his first singles title of the year and his 7th ATP title overall at the Citi Open defeating Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets.
Another significant performance was shown by the Aussie when he reached his maiden singles final at the 2022 Wimbledon Championship after receiving a walkover from Rafael Nadal at the semi-final match due to his injury. He put in a great fight but some unforced errors and less of experience resulted in Kyrgios losing the final match to the eventual winner Novak Djokovic. He will be one of the favorites going into the US Open with the level of tennis he is playing this year with the hope of making another appearance in the finals.
The Australian is an aggressive player on the court and often puts in a lot of drama during the match failing to take control over his emotions. He gets angry and gets into verbal arguments with the player, or sometimes with the umpires, and even sometimes with the audience. He has been also called a ‘bully‘ by his Wimbledon third-round opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas when he tried different ways to distract his opponent and shift his focus.
“Becoming a cador on the circuit by being present every week is not his trademark” Marion Bartoli on Nick Kyrgios
Marion Bartoli, the former Wimbledon champion believes that the Wimbledon finalist needs to be at his best and keep performing at the best level of tennis and revealed that Kyrgios should not skip from playing in the clay court season. She spoke “That Kyrgios is a kicker, a player who feels the excitement of big games, a player who isn’t afraid to take on the big guys, that’s obvious. But to manage to be a cador of the circuit, it is necessary to hold all the year. Already on clay, he doesn’t want to hear about it because for him it’s not a tennis surface. So already you take three months off the season including a Grand Slam tournament. “
She further added that “Afterwards, he is a player who needs a lot of affection, everyone behaves the way he wants to behave, but we know very well that it costs him a lot, being Australian and being away from home for a long time so at some point it unpins. It started showing up in Cincinnati against Taylor Fritz where it didn’t exist and the game was over in less than an hour. For me, he will always be an extremely flamboyant player, who will have the ability in a match to get them all, except Nadal on clay and a few exceptions. But becoming a cador on the circuit by being present every week is not Nick Kyrgios’ trademark.“
