Carlos Alcaraz has a staggering list of achievements in the year 2022, and it’s just been a few months. Alcaraz has racked up trophies and records with such ease and showmanship that he has instantly become one of the favorites in every tournament he plays. He is inside the ATP top 10 and has won two ATP 1000 Masters trophies and two consecutive tournaments as well. He became the youngest player ever to win the Mutua Madrid Open title.

He trounced “the king of clay,” Rafael Nadal, in the quarterfinals, came back from a set down to defeat the world number 1, Novak Djokovic, in the semifinal and obliterated the world number 3, Alexander Zverev, in the final of Madrid Open. He gave his home crowd a spectacle to remember. Alcaraz is brutish, confident, electrifying, and fiercely talented player. There have been many young talents in the game, but something sets him apart from every single one of them. There have been many observations on what Alcaraz is like, and Stefanos Ttsitsipas also talks about what he sees in the young maestro.

World number 5, and the runner-up of the 2021 French Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas, feels like he knows what Alcaraz is like. He believes that Carlos Alcaraz is just like his younger self. He says:

Some older guys will take it very – I don’t know – personal, it would strengthen your ego, let’s say. But you can see he’s very hungry. He plays very fresh and hungry, like has nothing to lose. It kind of reminds me of my early days when I was introduced to the ATP Tour. I didn’t really know what to expect along the way. I was just playing carelessly, completely free-spirited. It’s a nice thing to see.”

Tsitsipas feels that Alcaraz will be able to conduct himself quite well. He further adds:

“But, of course, with that comes a lot of responsibility and you have to be able to manage that well. I’m sure he will. I see no reason he will not. But with him in most of the draws, the lineup is getting even tougher. I will for sure have to work harder to get the results that I ever wanted.”

With all the existing top players and the entrances of new dynamos like Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas faces tough challenges if he is to repeat his previous year’s success in the French Open. Carlos Alcaraz’s performance in Madrid has made him one of the heavy favorites to lift the trophy at the Roland-Garros and take home his first of many Grand Slams.
