With the US Open around the corner, the spotlight on Novak Djokovic’s participation in the last grand slam of the year grows with each passing day. Being unvaccinated, Djokovic isn’t allowed to enter the USA and hence will most likely miss the US Open. But given the recent developments, the CDC might make amends in their ruling and there is still a very slim chance that Djokovic may be allowed to compete.

As of today, Djokovic is still on the entry list of the tournament despite being virtually out of the US Open provided he doesn’t intend to get vaccinated which he has made clear on several fronts. The US Open qualifying is underway and Djokovic, being in the draw means that he is taking up the place of one of the qualifiers who would’ve been in the main draw if Djokovic withdrew.

This also means that in the 128-player qualifying draw, Djokovic is also not allowing the 129th player on the entry list to compete. Journalist Ben Rothenberg pointed this out and revealed that World No.242, Pol Martin Tiffon, who has won a mere $25,434 in prize money all year would have entered qualifying if Djokovic would’ve withdrawn and that $21,000 prize money from qualifying would’ve helped him a lot.

“With Djokovic staying in, one fewer player will get to play at US Open. Next into qualies would’ve been #242 Pol Martin Tiffon, who has made only $25,434 in prize money all year. The prize money for just getting into qualies, $21,000, could have meant a lot to him,” he wrote.

He also further called out Djokovic’s selfish prerogative. “If Djokovic wants to take the selfish route and wait as long as possible to the detriment of others, that’s his prerogative. I’m just documenting this because it’s wild to see a star who can’t legally enter the US (because of his own choices) desperately clinging on like this,” he added.

American big-serving giant Reilly Opelka, who has withdrawn from the US Open, jumped into the conversation and slammed the journalist for his biased opinion. “Why wouldn’t he give himself the best chance of playing?” Opelka questioned.

He added that prioritizing himself has bought Djokovic a long way and also called Ben’s personal hatred and obsession towards Djokovic very unprofessional. “‘Desperately clinging on’ has gotten him pretty far in this business wouldn’t you say? Your personal hatred and obsession towards Novak is so unprofessional,” Opelka said.

Ben further explained himself by saying that Djokovic should withdraw because realistically, there is no chance that he would play the US Open and defended himself by claiming that he is just criticizing a player’s views which is his job as a journalist.

Opelka further lauded Djokovic’s mindset and questioned Ben’s integrity once again. “Imagine if Novak didn’t hang on when odds were against him.. Or let’s imagine he cared about opportunities for other players! He probably wouldn’t have 21 grand slams. Which makes me question if you either hate Novak, or just not understand tennis,” he said.
