‘Sunshine Double’ for Nick Kyrgios as he gets handed another hefty fine for verbal abuse
Nick Kyrgios
Nick Kyrgios’s outburst at the 2022 Miami Open has landed him a hefty fine by the ATP. The Australian smashed his racquet and launched an expletive-laden rant at the umpire during his fourth-round exit against Jannik Sinner. Kyrgios repeatedly blurted expletives at the umpire Carlos Bernardes and even said he was incompetent to be even called an umpire. For his tirade during the match, the Australian was even-handed a game penalty, which completely dwindled his chances of winning the match.
Kyrgios first received a code violation for foul language and then was given a point penalty at 5-3 in the first set tie-break for unsportsmanlike conduct. After he lost the first set, Kyrgios smashed his racket in a fit of rage, for which he was handed a game penalty. His tantrums did not end there however as he called the umpire a ‘fu****g retard’ as he made his way off the court. The ATP handed out a fine of $35,000 for his antics, which included audible obscenity, verbal abuse, and two counts of unsportsmanlike conduct.
Kyrgios is no stranger to his on-court outbursts. Just a couple of weeks ago at the Indian Wells, he lost his cool multiple times and nearly hit a ball kid in a fit of rage. He was fined $25,000 for his obscenity-laced tantrum.
‘He should be suspended’: Fans react to Nick Kyrgios’ fine
This is the second tournament in a row where Kyrgios was handed a fine for his on-court antics, but there is no stopping the temperamental Australian. While some saw his outburst as entertaining idiosyncrasy others felt Kyrgios needed to be handed a suspension as the fines seemed to be of no avail.
